10 Tips to Keep your RV fridge cold during summer:
Camping in the summer is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but it can be challenging to keep your RV fridge cold in areas with high summer temperatures like Texas. The hot weather can make it difficult for your fridge to keep up, and you don’t want to come back to a fridge full of spoiled food. Here are 10 tips to help you keep your RV fridge cold during the summer and running smoothly and efficiently:
- Keep the door closed as much as possible. Every time you open the door, warm air from the outside gets in and the fridge has to work harder to cool things down. Try to only open the door when you need to get something out or put something in.
- Don’t overload the fridge. When the fridge is packed too full, the air can’t circulate properly and the fridge has to work harder to stay cold. Leave some space between items so that the air can flow freely. Make sure any visible vents are not blocked.
- Clean the coils regularly. The coils on the back of your fridge are responsible for releasing heat, so it’s important to keep them clean to prevent them from overheating. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove any dust or debris.
- Put hot food in the fridge after it has cooled down. Putting hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature inside the fridge and make it work harder to cool down. Let hot food cool down to room temperature before putting it in the fridge.
- Use a generator or inverter. If you’re boondocking or camping in a remote area without hookups, you’ll need to use a generator or inverter to power your fridge. A generator is a more powerful option, but it can be noisy. An inverter is quieter, but it doesn’t produce as much power.
- Use a cooler for drinks. Drinks can take up a lot of space in the fridge, so it’s a good idea to use a cooler instead. This will help to keep your drinks cold and free up space in the fridge for other food.
- Keep the fridge in a shady spot. If you can, park your RV in a shady spot so that the sun doesn’t heat up the fridge directly. If a shady spot is not available, consider which side of your RV your fridge is on and park the RV so the fridge side is the shadiest side possible. Also consider sun shades where appropriate.
- Pack ice packs. If you’re not able to use a generator or inverter, you can pack ice packs in the fridge to help keep it cold.
- Check the temperature regularly. It’s a good idea to check the temperature of your fridge regularly to make sure it’s staying cold. The ideal temperature for a fridge is 37 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Have a backup plan. If your fridge does break down, it’s important to have a backup plan. You can pack a cooler with ice or buy a portable fridge.
By following these tips, you can help to keep your RV fridge cold and your food safe during the summer months.
